👩🍳 Instructions:
1. Toast the Tarhonya:
- Heat fat in a large skillet or pot over medium heat.
- Add the tarhonya and toast it, stirring frequently, until it turns golden brown. This gives it a wonderful nutty flavor.
2. Add Liquid:
- Carefully pour in hot water or broth (it will steam!).
- Add salt, stir, and bring to a simmer.
3. Cook Covered:
- Lower the heat and cover the pot.
- Cook for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until liquid is absorbed and tarhonya is tender.
- If needed, add a bit more water to avoid sticking or burning.
4. Fluff and Serve:
- Remove from heat, fluff with a fork, and let it sit a few minutes.
- Serve as a side dish with paprikash, goulash, pörkölt, or fried eggs.
🍳 Optional Add-Ins:
- Sautéed onions or garlic (added during toasting)
- Stir in peas, mushrooms, or cooked sausage
- Sprinkle with fresh parsley before serving
