- Cook the noodles:
Boil until tender, drain, and set aside with a touch of oil to prevent sticking. - Caramelize the cabbage:
Heat oil/butter in a large skillet. Add onion (if using) and cook until soft. Add shredded cabbage and sprinkle with sugar. Sauté slowly over medium heat, stirring often, for 20–30 minutes until cabbage is soft, golden, and slightly caramelized. Season generously with salt and black pepper. - Mix & warm through:
Add the cooked noodles to the pan, toss everything together, and cook another 2–3 minutes until heated through and flavors meld.
🍽️ Serving Suggestions:
- Traditional Hungarian homes enjoy it as-is, but some add a little cracked pepper or even a touch of paprika.
- Want a twist? Add crumbled bacon or serve with a dollop of sour cream.
