Shrimp and Sausage Gumbo (Served Over Rice) 🍤🌭🍚
Ingredients
- 1 lb (450 g) shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 12 oz (340 g) smoked sausage, sliced
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 2 celery stalks, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 6 cups chicken or seafood broth
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp Cajun seasoning
- Salt & black pepper, to taste
- Cooked white rice, for serving
- Chopped green onions or parsley (optional)
Instructions
- In a heavy pot, heat oil over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook, stirring constantly, until dark brown (about 15–20 minutes).
- Add onion, bell pepper, and celery to the roux; cook until softened.
- Stir in garlic, paprika, Cajun seasoning, salt, and pepper.
- Gradually add broth, stirring to combine. Add bay leaves.
- Simmer 25–30 minutes until thick and flavorful.
- Add sausage and cook 10 minutes.
- Add shrimp and cook 3–5 minutes until pink.
- Serve hot over rice. Garnish if desired.
